Among the Fante people, these appliqu banners known as frankaa were created for the asafo, the traditional warrior companies, each one stitched to carry a proverb, a boast or a warning to rival groups. The design is built up by hand in layered, hand cut cloth, giving it the slightly naive, story book quality that has made Asafo flags so collectable
